Meet Joe
I grew up near Seattle and picked up the guitar in 1997. What started as an obsession with rock and blues pulled me into jazz, metal, funk, folk, and bluegrass. In the years since, I’ve picked up the ukulele, bass, mandolin, banjo, drums, piano, and vocals.
In the 2000s, I studied computer science at Harvey Mudd College and jazz studies at San Diego State University.
Why mention computer science? Because most of my adult students work in tech, and I know how you think. I love systems, learning, and building efficient paths toward mastery. Teaching guitar has given me the chance to combine those things. I can take the complexity of music and organize it into something clear and motivating.
In 2011, I moved back to Seattle and started Deft Digits. Now I split my time between homeschooling my two awesome kids, working with a full roster of guitar students, and pursuing all my musical obsessions.
