The August Student of the Month is seven-year-old ukulele player Nicole. She’s been playing for about a year, taking lessons here for the last three months. Nicole always brightens my day with her smiles and endless enthusiasm for learning new songs. And she’s learned a lot of songs: “Happy Birthday,” “Country Roads,” “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” “The Alphabet Song,” “Old MacDonald,” and the tune she chose for her video, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” As of last week, she’d learned enough to start her own Uke-opoly, a customized board game I make with many of my younger students.
Judging by Nicole’s tastes, I think I see a parade of Disney songs in her future. Two more Poppins classics, “Let’s Go Fly a Kite,” and “A Spoonful of Sugar” are next on her to-do list. I’ll also be lobbying for one of my personal favorites, “Chim Chim Cher-ee.”
